One of our longest-standing traditions at Session are the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. At the Opening Ceremony, the Lieutenant Governor formally begins Session and reads the Speech from the Throne. Beginning in the 94th Session, the Opening Ceremony includes a traditional Indigenous pipe ceremony performed by an elder, where members acknowledge the history of our land and have the opportunity to smudge. At the Closing Ceremony, Session is prorogued and members say their final goodbyes.
Assisting in our ceremonies is a contingent of Cadets from local units in the province, as well as bagpipers who serve as musical accompaniment.
Invitations for our ceremonies are sent out to all friends of Youth Parliament of Manitoba. Relatives and friends of participants are also welcome. Attendees are not required to RSVP.
Parents and friends are invited to the Manitoba Legislature’s visitors gallery to observe our sittings. A schedule for the 97th Winter Session will be posted closer to the event.
