The Reconciliation Fund was started in the summer of 2016, when the Youth Parliament of Manitoba began iterating the possibilities for living up to our mandate of ‘Indigenizing’ the organization. An idea of starting a fund to bring 10 Indigenous youth to Winter Session, free of charge – covering clothing, travel, and food costs – was pitched.
In its first year, the Reconciliation Fund did not manage to cover even half as many youth as it was intended to. YPM is happy to say that in 2017, we were able to host seven Indigenous youth at Winter Session, including two who were flown in from Northern Manitoba.
2017 was a successful year for the Reconciliation Fund, and provided learning opportunities. We predict that in 2018, 10 members will attend Winter Session through the Reconciliation Fund, as originally pitched.
