Looking back on YPM102

Towards the end of any session of parliament, lawmakers start to get impatient. Once dissolution arrives, members are able to return home to their ridings. There’s an old saying that politicians start to pick up the “smell of jet fuel.” The same cannot be said for the end of this year’s session of Youth Parliament. We debated a range of topics, from the exciting world of zoning rules, to the dangers of iPads, and our Bill Presenting Ministers did a fabulous job of sparking debate. However, the ultimate value of this organization goes above and beyond the world of politics. People come to Youth Parliament at a time in their life when they are figuring out who they are. At its best, Session helps them learn how to build and maintain relationships, argue thoughtfully, and use office printers. I will never forget YPM102. It was my first year on Cabinet. I hope that I can grow as much as this organization has. In the end, I know that there is no better reason to sleep on the floor of a school.
