About Youth Parliament of Manitoba

Welcome to the website of Youth Parliament of Manitoba (YPM). We are one of the oldest model parliament organizations on the planet and have held sessions continuously since 1922.

What we are

YPM is a non-profit, non-partisan, non-denominational corporation in the Canadian province of Manitoba.

Who we are

A past executive team.

Our organization is run according to our motto of "For Youth, By Youth." The corporation's 5-person Board of Directors (Parliamentary Executive) are all between the ages of 18 and 25 and are directly elected by and from the membership.

The success of Youth Parliament of Manitoba is also contingent on our cabinet, who work tirelessly to ensure a great experience for all members. The cabinet consists of 20 members named by the executive to fill various "ministries" in the government. Their duties include all aspects of running session from food preparation and photocopying through to public relations and drafting of the legislation to be debated.

Members of YPM come from all corners of the province. All youth within our age limits (16-20) are eligible to become members. Applications are normally taken only in the months leading up to one of our parliamentary sessions.

What we do

Our premiere event of the year is our Winter Session, which occurs every year from 26-30 December. Youth aged 16-20 come from across Manitoba spend five days debating in the beautiful Manitoba Legislative Building.

As a member, you will take part in stimulating debate on a broad range of issues relevant to youth. You will act as a member of parliament and it will be up to you to voice your opinions concerning the proposed legislation and develop amendments to improve them.

YPM is not only for students interested in politics or debating; it's for all young people who would like to have a unique and exhilarating experience and meet other people your own age. Even if you know nothing about politics or the parliamentary process, you will still get to meet some of the most interesting young people in the province, and learn something about how your government works.

How we do it

All of our actions are guided by our Mission Statement, which mandates us to

foster amongst the youth of Manitoba an understanding of, an interest in, and an engagement with the Canadian democratic parliamentary process and, in so doing, to encourage the growth of the individual and their abilities.
