Western Canada Youth Parliament

In addition to the parliamentary sessions held exclusively by and for young people in Manitoba, members of YPM also have the unique and extraordinary opportunity to participate in a joint session of all four provinces in Western Canada.

This session is known as the Western Canada Youth Parliament. It features a congregation of members from all four YPs in Western Canada: YPM, Saskatchewan Youth Parliament, Tuxis Parliament of Alberta and British Columbia Youth Parliament.

Logo

Youth Parliament of Manitoba designed the above logo when it hosted the 14th Western Canada Youth Parliament. The logo symbolizes the four western provinces that come together every two years for WCYP. It was recommended for adoption for future WCYP sessions in a resolution passed by participants of the 14th WCYP. A vector version of the logo can be downloaded here.

History

In 1981, YPM (then known as Youth Parliament of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario) organized the first WCYP as a project to commemorate our 60th anniversary. This marked the first occasion where representatives from all four YPs in Western Canada attended (although BCYP did not officially endorse its participation.)

The first Western Canada Youth Parliament in which all four western provincial youth parliaments officially participated was held in the Alberta legislature in 1983.

In 2010, Youth Parliament of Manitoba hosted the 14th Western Canada Youth Parliament at the Manitoba Legislature. You can find photos from this event here.
